Charlie had glaucoma of the left eye that could not be
controlled despite aggressive medical treatment. Uncontrolled
glaucoma is extemely painful and patients usually require surgery
for long term comfort. Charlie had developed rapidly
progressing cataracts in both eyes due to diabetes. This
rapid cataract formation resulted in severe intraocular
inflammation, which led to the glaucoma. This is a common
problem that we see in diabetic Schnauzers. Due to Charlie's
chronic pain from the glaucoma and poor prognosis for vision, an
intrascleral prosthesis surgery was performed. This surgery
provides a more cosmetic result compared to an enucleation (removal
of the eye). With an intrascleral prosthesis, the tissue inside the
eye is removed, but the outer "shell" of the eye remains.
Following healing, this procedure results in an eye that
appears almost normal; most people are not able to tell which eye
has had the procedure. Charlie had this procedure done in late
December and is now doing very well at home! The above photo
is of the left eye several months after surgery.
